How does stuffed animals increase the chances of sudden infant death syndrome?
If there are toys in the crib, on the opposite side of the crib will that affect the baby? (the baby wont be sleeping on the same side as the stuffed animals are. the toys will not be near him). also are bumpers bad to use in the crib? burping a baby too hard causes sid? (something i just read) is this true?

- toys might suffocate the baby thats why people dont put them in the crib
- Soft toys are made of wool and cotton, materials which can trap dust or get dirty easily. The baby would bite, mouth, tongue, lick and gnaw on the soft toy all day long. He/ she would inhale the dust and/or other dirty germs which will be bad for the baby's health, affecting lungs and other organs which are still developing. Bumpers are bad for a crib as babies may hurt themselves with them.
- Why risk it? What are the toys in there for? Baby doesn't care - why risk any link at all with SIDS for the sake of making the crib look cute for adults? Bumpers are considered a bad idea because they reduce air flow around baby. No, burping a baby too hard doesn't cause SIDS. Hitting a baby that hard is child abuse and the cause of death would not be SIDS, it would be manslaughter or whatever you call it where you live.
- You have to burp a baby a bit harder then you think because it works. with our fist we really struggled with wind until the midwife showed me how she would do it WOW it was a lot harder than i thought it should be but 3 children down the line & that is how we bring wind up now in our house. so no winding with an aim would not cause sids
- The burping thing, I have never heard of that? They say dont use toys in the crib because it could be a choking or suffocation hazard. My 4 month old is very wiggly and even if the toys are at her feet she find a way to get at them. Some people theorize that SIDS may be caused by babies breathing their own air, hence why a fan may be good to circulate the air. So people are cautions about putting bumpers in the bed so that air can flow through the crib freely. It may also be a suffocation hazard if the baby pulls the bumper off.
- Well, if your baby is not moving around yet, then the stuffed animals should not be able to suffocate. however, my daughter started moving around very very early, so why risk it? Sids is not caused from burping a baby too hard. If you burp a baby too hard, its because you're frustrated, and you shouldnt be near a baby if you're that frustrated. Good luck
- Babies move when they sleep. I know I would put my baby to sleep on one end of the crib and she would end up on the other side and she wasn't rolling over yet. She would just move around. You don't want her to suffocate on a stuffed animal. Bumper pads are not recommended because of lack of air flow and they may get pushed up against the side and not have the power to roll over so they can breathe. It's best not to take a risk at all. The crib should be bare except a mattress and sheet of course. Dress him/her to where she/he won't need a blanket and will be comfortable.
